Dragon Hot Pot opens record-breaking outlet at Bukit Bintang

Dragon Hot Pot debuts in Bukit Bintang, bringing its viral Australian malatang concept to Malaysia with record-breaking variety

The Australian-born hot pot phenomenon, Dragon Hot Pot, has officially arrived in Malaysia, opening its first outlet at Low Yat Park in Bukit Bintang. Spanning 2,600 square feet, the launch introduces Malaysians to the brand’s globally-viral, custom-made malatang concept – a modern, self-service twist on the traditional Sichuan hot pot.

The grand opening was officiated by Samuel Lee Thai Hung, Deputy Director General (Promotion II) of Tourism Malaysia, underscoring the government’s support for food-centric tourism initiatives. Lee hailed Dragon Hot Pot’s entry as a timely addition to Malaysia’s growing culinary scene, particularly as the nation gears up for Visit Malaysia 2026, the country’s largest tourism campaign.

“This grand opening couldn’t be more timely,” said Lee. “Under the recently tabled Budget 2026, Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced over RM700 million to boost tourism nationwide, including a RM500 million fund dedicated specifically to the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.”

Lee added that such investments highlight Malaysia’s recognition of food and hospitality as major drivers of tourism growth. “Our vibrant food scenes are among the greatest tourism assets Malaysia has,” he said.

Strengthening tourism through culinary experiences

Beyond promoting international tourism, Lee also pointed to government initiatives that encourage Malaysians to explore their own country. One standout feature in Budget 2026, he said, is a special income tax relief of up to RM1,000 for expenses related to entrance fees to local tourism attractions and cultural programmes.

“This is a smart way to channel spending back into our local economy,” he explained. “When people explore our museums, parks, and cultural spots, they’re also supporting small and medium-sized businesses in accommodation, transport, local food, and cultural activities. These are the real heartbeat of Malaysia’s tourism ecosystem.”

He noted that after a full day of sightseeing in Kuala Lumpur, both locals and visitors are likely to turn to the city’s dining hotspots to unwind. “Visitors will turn to the city’s diverse dining scene to complete the experience, with comforting spots like Dragon Hot Pot adding to the capital’s growing reputation as a food lover’s haven.,” Lee said.

Record-breaking launch

A highlight of the event was Dragon Hot Pot’s ASEAN Records recognition for achieving the title of “Most Hotpot Ingredient and Soup Base Variety by an Australian Mala Hotpot Brand.” The brand impressed with an extensive selection of 162 ingredients and 10 distinctive soup bases, cementing its place as one of the most diverse and customizable hot pot experiences in the region.

“We want to redefine how people experience hot pot,” said Louis Kuo, Brand Founder of Dragon Hot Pot Malaysia. “Traditionally, hot pot is seen as a long, sit-down affair. But in a fast-paced city like Kuala Lumpur, we want to make it more accessible — whether it’s a quick lunch break, casual dinner, or late-night craving.”

Central to Dragon Hot Pot’s appeal is its commitment to authenticity and inclusivity. Its signature broths are crafted from century-old Sichuan recipes, simmered for over 12 hours using old chickens, more than 20 Chinese herbs, and Sichuan pepper. To cater to Malaysian diners, the entire menu is pork-free, lard-free, and alcohol-free, with the company currently pursuing halal certification from JAKIM.

Operated by Taste of Malaysia Hot Pot Sdn. Bhd., this debut marks the brand’s first step in its regional expansion after its success in Australia, Indonesia, and Vietnam, with Japan slated next. Over the next two years, Dragon Hot Pot aims to open five to six new outlets across the Klang Valley and other major cities, while inviting local entrepreneurs to join through franchise opportunities.

A celebration of culture and community

The launch event celebrated not just food but culture and community spirit. Guests were treated to traditional lion and dragon dances, a graceful Chinese Fan dance, and modern performances by popular artists STEADYGANG and Diana Danielle. The atmosphere was festive, with long queues of eager diners forming as the brand kicked off its opening-day promotion — a complimentary 300g serving of hot pot for every customer.

Food enthusiasts can also look forward to two major promotions this October. From October 18 to 20, customers will receive their first 300g of malatang free, while from October 21 to 31, those spending RM25 or more can win prizes including an iPad, Labubu collectibles, AirPods, dining vouchers, and even a year of free Dragon Hot Pot.
