Penang proudly hosted the prestigious 28th International Museum Day Festival (HMA) 2024, held from May 13th to May 23rd at Dewan Sri Pinang in George Town.
This marked the first time Penang served as the national-level host for this significant event, themed “Museum for Education and Research.”
A celebration of heritage and unity
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, the event’s guest of honor, commended Penang’s efforts in hosting the festival.
“HMA 2024 attracts renowned museum professionals from around the world and across Malaysia,” he stated.
“This prestigious event fosters unity and empowers museum institutions, playing a crucial role in safeguarding our historical legacy.”
Chow acknowledged the dedication of those involved in heritage preservation.
“Without museums,” he emphasised, “historical facts and artefacts would vanish, diminishing our sense of identity.”
He expressed his belief that the festival would inspire a deeper appreciation for the rich heritage of Penang and Malaysia.
The unique allure of Penang
Penang’s reputation as a global heritage destination was highlighted by Chief Minister Chow. “Our state is renowned for its heritage buildings and diverse culinary scene,” he declared.
“George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasts exceptional heritage architecture that is a must-see for any visitor.”
Chow expressed his gratitude to the tireless efforts of various parties that contributed to the festival’s success, including the State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee, the State Museum and Art Gallery, and Penang Global Tourism.
International participants, including the Malay Heritage Centre Singapore, IHH Creative Hub Jakarta, and Asosiasi Museum Indonesia Kalimantan, were also acknowledged for their involvement.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai encouraged international participants to explore Penang’s heritage sites.
“We have numerous attractions that offer a deeper understanding of our heritage,” he stated, expressing his pride in Penang’s role as host.
Deputy Unity Minister Saraswathy Kandasami, representing Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, shared her personal connection to the venue.
“Dewan Sri Pinang evokes fond memories from my youth,” she remarked, reminiscing about her time spent studying nearby.
The presence of distinguished guests, including Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying and Haryany, the director of the State Museum and Art Gallery, further underscored the significance of the event.
