Floods in the Kerian district in Perak have forced the evacuation of 340 people.
The evacuees are from Batu 37 and Batu 38 Jalan Keretapi, Kampung Parit Abu Hasan, Parit Haji Hasan Ban, Batu 40 Jalan Bukit Merah, Parit Mat Keling, Kampung Tebuk Pancur, Kampung Parit Ayer Hitam, Kampung Alor Setangguk and Kampung Perlis.
Kerian police chief Supt Mat Fauzi Nayan said the evacuees were being accommodated at Sekolah Kebangsaan Alor Pongsu, Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Merah and at the community halls in Alor Pongsu, Batu 38 Parit Abu Hasan and Batu 40 Bukit Merah.
Their villages were flooded to a depth of between 0.5 metre and one metre following the release of water from the Bukit Merah Dam as a result of heavy rain over the past three days, he said.
Mat Fauzi said the stretch of the Alor Pongsu-Selama Road was closed at the 38th mile was closed to light vehicles.
In SUNGAI PETANI, 237 people from three villages in the Kuala Muda district were evacuated after floods hit last night following heavy rain from 5pm to 9pm.
The evacuees are from Kampung Jerong, Kampung Batu 5 and Kampung Sungkup Para.
Kuala Muda social welfare officer Mohammad Mohd Nor said the department had distributed foodstuff to the evacuees.
