Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Mukhriz Mahathir today regretted the refusal of some hypermarkets to sell products made by local small and medium enterprises (SMEs), despite their improving quality.
He said there were also supermarkets which imposed a huge fee on SMEs to display their products at their premises.
“The ministry is looking into the problem and will ask the supermarkets to ensure products by SMEs are sold at their premises,” he said when addressing more than 50 SME operators from Kedah and Perlis, at a function here today.
Mukhriz also hoped that international hypermarkets chains could help sell products of Malaysian SMEs overseas.
He said there were some hypermarkets in the country which are assisting the government in growing the country’s SME sector.
In addition to retialing the products, these hypermarkets have also set up service centres to help the SMEs improve the quality of their products, he added.
He said the government also provided assistance to SMEs to sell their products abroad.
