Kumar Karthigesu will present a one-night performance called Sandhya Sunset at 6.30 pm in Studio Ramli Hassan on February 1st
Tabla master Vickneshwaran Ramakrishnan, fondly known as Vicky, will accompany Kumar in this intimate performance of Sitar music.
Kumar Karthigesu, a life-long love affair with Sitar, started in 1983 when he learned how to play the classical instrument under the tutelage of Pandit Dharambir Singha, the disciple of the world-renowned Ustad Vilayat Khan while staying in Leicester as a schoolboy.
When he returned to Malaysia in 1986, Kumar briefly learned sitar lessons from Shri Orme Maheswaran, a disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar, before meeting his lifelong Guru, Ustad Usman Khan.
Under the tutelage of his Guru, Kumar becomes the artist he is today and more. Besides performing classical, contemporary, and world music, Kumar teaches at The Temple of Fine Arts in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Universiti Malaya, and ASWARA.
A founding member of AkashA, Kumar, with his music group, has iconic status locally and on the international stage. Besides that, he serves as the principal Sitar artist for the Malaysian Traditional Orchestra (Orkestra Tradisional Malaysia). Apart from appearing as a guest artist for various established music groups in Malaysia, he also frequently featured in RTM Orchestra and National Symphony Orchestra.
In 2012, the Malaysian government recognised Kumar by giving him the National Living Heritage title (Tokoh Warisan Negara) by the Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negara.
