Tourism Malaysia supports turtle conservation initiative

Tourism Malaysia’s CSR event at Port Dickson promotes turtle conservation & sustainable tourism. Baby turtles released, symbolizing hope for tourists’ return

In a bid to raise awareness about the critical importance of turtle conservation and bolster the survival rate of turtle hatching, Tourism Malaysia has taken a significant step forward by launching a socially responsible initiative at the pristine beaches of Port Dickson.

Under the umbrella of its social corporate responsibility (CSR) program, Tourism Malaysia organized a remarkable event at Lexis Hibiscus Port Dickson where 24 dedicated staff members from the Package Development Division actively participated. The highlight of the event was the release of adorable baby turtles into the ocean, creating a poignant moment symbolizing the agency’s unwavering commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable tourism practices.

Dato’ Dr. Ammar Abd. Ghapar, Director-General of Tourism Malaysia, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating, “The event symbolises our hopes for tourists. As turtles return to the spot where they were born to mate and lay their eggs, we hope that tourists will keep flocking back to Malaysia again and again from wherever they have been to.”

The significance of the turtle in Tourism Malaysia’s endeavors goes back to its inception in 1972 with the establishment of the Tourist Development Corporation (TDC). In 1986, the iconic turtle logo was introduced, symbolizing not only nostalgia but also a tribute to the numerous remarkable milestones and achievements celebrated over the years in the country’s tourism sector.

Preserving natural wonders for future generations

The event at Port Dickson is part of a broader initiative spearheaded by the Department of Fisheries, in collaboration with the Turtle Showroom at Port Dickson Ornamental Fish Centre. The mission aims to conserve the endangered Green Turtle and Hawkbill Turtle species while also educating the public about the crucial role turtles play in maintaining marine ecosystems and preserving Malaysia’s rich marine biodiversity.

This CSR program by Tourism Malaysia coincides with the Package Development Division’s 2024 – 2026 Strategic Workshop, scheduled to take place in Port Dickson from 3rd to 5th August 2023. The workshop will be attended by industry experts, government officials, and conservationists who will collaboratively chart out comprehensive strategies for the upcoming years leading up to Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

With a collective effort and a shared vision, these stakeholders will play a pivotal role in shaping the tourism landscape, with a particular focus on enhancing niche tourism segments and overall travel experiences for both local and international tourists.

The involvement of Tourism Malaysia in turtle conservation showcases the agency’s dedication to sustainable tourism practices and sets a positive example for other entities to follow. As the world faces environmental challenges, such initiatives prove to be vital steps in preserving natural wonders for future generations while also ensuring a thriving tourism industry in Malaysia.
