Beam Mobility, a prominent micro-mobility operator in the Asia Pacific region, has initiated a groundbreaking partnership with the Miri City Council.

The collaboration paves the way for the introduction of shared e-scooter services in Miri, marking the first instance of such services being offered by any city council in East Malaysia.

This development is a direct outcome of Miri City Council’s Transformation Lab initiative, aimed at transforming Miri City into a Green, Smart, and Highly Livable Resort City by 2030.

Beam Mobility’s mission is elegantly simple: to enhance urban mobility by offering convenient and sustainable transportation options. Beam e-scooters fill a significant gap in public transportation by providing efficient connectivity to transit hubs, popular destinations, and local attractions without the need for private vehicle ownership.

Many tourist cities in Malaysia and across the Asia Pacific region have already experienced the economic benefits of offering e-scooter services to both residents and tourists.

To kickstart this initiative, 100 purple shared e-scooters are now available for hire at various locations throughout Miri City. Users can effortlessly locate e-scooter parking spots using the Beam mobile app, starting their ride with a straightforward QR code scan. Payments and important safety messages are also managed digitally through the app.

“This is a significant milestone for both parties, and we are delighted that Miri is the first city in East Malaysia to introduce e-scooter services. Electric vehicle ownership can often appear costly and complex. Partnering with an operator like Beam offers affordability and eliminates the hassles of charging and maintaining an EV for riders,” stated Justin Tiew, General Manager at Beam.

Beam Mobility has an extensive presence in Malaysia, operating in eight cities and 18 universities, including UNIMAS and UiTM Sarawak.

The company is dedicated to supporting Sarawak’s ambitious sustainability targets, including achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and reducing CO2 emissions by 600,000 tonnes annually through the provision of fully electric alternative transportation.

Justin added, “We eagerly anticipate collaborating with other city councils and partners in various parts of Sarawak. We aim to extend our services to Kuching, Sibu, and Bintulu and welcome government cooperation in making Sarawak’s cities greener, more vibrant, and sustainable while embracing transformative technologies that contribute significantly to these objectives.”

While Beam e-scooters may appear compact, they are equipped with top-tier technology and hardware. These e-scooters feature a robust aircraft-grade aluminum chassis, housing an efficient electric powertrain and a high-grade IoT communications device. These components ensure rider safety and responsible operation.

Beam’s proprietary virtual parking technology encourages proper usage and return of e-scooters, while speed-limiting technology caps speeds at 25km/h to prevent excessive speeding, even downhill. The company uses 24-hour geofencing technology to ensure e-scooter riders stay within approved designated areas, prioritizing the safety of riders, pedestrians, and other road users. Additionally, all of Beam’s e-scooters are equipped with batteries certified to the highest industry standards for fire and water safety.
