AirAsia Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Capital A Berhad, has taken a significant step towards supporting local social enterprises dedicated to creating sustainable urban communities.
The ‘City Catalysts’ event, hosted at the Central Market, provided a vibrant platform for entrepreneurs to showcase their products and services while fostering sustainable development and community empowerment in urban spaces.

A diverse array of social enterprises participated in the ‘City Catalysts’ event, exemplifying their commitment to positive social impact.
Noteworthy participants included Destination GOOD, Eat, Shoots, Roots, Asli & Co Craft, Hara Makers, Kraf Kadamaian, Sluvi, Oililin, Coffee for Good, Jom MakCik, Gerai OA, and Athena Empowers.
These enterprises contribute to various aspects of community development, from urban farming to empowering marginalized communities through cycling.
Yap Mun Ching, Executive Director of AirAsia Foundation described ‘City Catalysts’ as an embodiment of this dedication, providing a dynamic platform for entrepreneurs and paving the way for a more sustainable and inclusive economic landscape.
She emphasized the pivotal role of supporting local brands, stating, “By championing these local social enterprises, we hope to contribute to job creation, community empowerment, and the overall well-being of our society.”
Addressing critical aspects of community development
The event featured insightful talks addressing critical aspects of community development. Notable sessions included “Ageless Adventures” by Jom MakCik and “Pedaling Progress” by The Basikal, both recipients of AirAsia Foundation’s Social Enterprise Grant Funding.
These discussions aimed at making travel accessible for seniors and empowering marginalized communities through cycling. Participants also had the unique opportunity to explore Borneon heritage through talks on traditional hand-tap tattoos by Eleanor Goroh from Sabah.
Sluvi, a social enterprise from East Malaysia, stood out by focusing on uplifting farmers through skincare products. Their long-term goal involves creating a sustainable farming ecosystem in Sarawak villages, promoting farmer income, knowledge in sustainable farming, and the production of quality natural ingredients.
“Across Asean, we have helped fund 31 social enterprises, reaching a total of 12,001 family and community members in seven countries. This extensive outreach translates to a substantial investment of US$171 per beneficiary, making a direct impact on 3,334 individuals.”
Ching highlighted the commitment to making a tangible difference, stating, “As we continue to support local social businesses, we envision a future where our efforts contribute to the long-term prosperity and vibrancy of the communities we serve.”
