Melaka’s UNESCO sites get RM 25 mil fund for preservation

PM Anwar announces RM25 million for Melaka’s UNESCO heritage. The state also receives RM 10 million for TVET apart from development funds.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced an additional RM 25 million allocation for the preservation of heritage sites in Melaka designated by UNESCO.

During an event with civil servants at the Melaka International Trade Centre, the government reinforced its commitment to safeguarding the state’s rich historical legacy by making the announcement.

Anwar Ibrahim elaborated on the significance of the allocation, emphasising its role in safeguarding Melaka’s vital historical heritage and unique tourist attractions, particularly those with special ties to China.

He stated, “I agree to prioritise Melaka with an allocation of RM 25 million,” underscoring the government’s dedication to preserving the state’s UNESCO-designated sites.

Anwar explained that the allocation formed part of the discussions he had during a briefing with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf Yusoh at Seri Negeri.

He elaborated, “For example, the allocation for UNESCO heritage sites, which are related to Melaka’s important historical heritage and its outstanding tourist attractions with special ties to China. “

Melaka sees funding increase for development projects

In addition to the allocation for heritage preservation, Anwar disclosed that Melaka would receive a total of RM 238.7 million this year, marking an increase from RM 233.6 million allocated last year.

The Prime Minister outlined various development projects, with RM 800 million earmarked for 230 projects in Melaka.

Among the notable projects, the Sungai Putat Flood Mitigation Plan, valued at RM 72.8 million, and the House Repair Assistance Programme 2024/2025, amounting to RM 10.1 million, stand out.

Furthermore, Anwar Ibrahim announced an additional RM 10 million in funding to enhance the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme in Melaka.

The government aims to foster stronger partnerships and synergy between TVET institutions and industry players with these funds.

This reflects the government’s commitment to advancing skills development and employment opportunities in the state.

Anwar concluded the event by expressing his gratitude for the invitation extended by the Melaka State Government to attend the Commemoration Ceremony of the Declaration of Independence of the Federation of Malaya on February 20th.

Despite his busy schedule, Anwar acknowledged the importance of commemorating this historic moment, led by Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al Haj in Banda Hilir.

He affirmed the significance of such efforts in preserving the nation’s history and reiterated his commitment to honouring Malaysia’s heritage.
