H’ng Mooi Lye, Chairman of the State Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee, emphasizes the importance of tree safety.

“We have instructed the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) to conduct regular inspections of trees, especially older ones that may pose a higher risk,” he states.

This initiative involves both increased monitoring and the submission of weekly reports by the MBPP and MBSP.

These reports will detail the condition of trees, particularly those exceeding 80 or 100 years old.

By closely monitoring the health and stability of these mature trees, the state government aims to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

H’ng acknowledges the delicate balance between ensuring public safety and preserving Penang’s unique character.

“We understand the importance of trees in Penang,” he remarks.

“The Local Government Act restricts the arbitrary removal of trees, particularly those of a certain size.”

The focus is on thorough inspections to identify potential hazards and implement necessary maintenance measures, such as trimming branches, to mitigate risks without unnecessary tree removal.

The Penang state government’s prompt response to the recent incident demonstrates its commitment to prioritizing the safety of its citizens.

By implementing stricter tree inspection protocols, they aim to create a safer environment for everyone while still appreciating and preserving Penang’s natural beauty.
