Pulau Tioman unveils underwater LRT coach reef

Pulau Tioman debuts Malaysia’s first underwater LRT coach reef, enhancing marine biodiversity and attracting tourists with its unique diving experience

Pulau Tioman, already renowned for its pristine beaches and snorkeling spots, has added a new and unique attraction to its list of must-visit destinations. The island now boasts an underwater light rail transit (LRT) coach reef, where visitors can experience the novelty of exploring decommissioned LRT coaches submerged beneath the waves. This innovative dive spot promises to blend the thrill of underwater exploration with the familiarity of a daily commute.

The launch of Pulau Tioman’s new underwater LRT coach reef was held at Berjaya Tioman Resort, as reported by Bernama on 14th July 2024. Officially named the Al-Sultan Abdullah Dive Site, this attraction involves a pair of LRT coaches from the Kelana Jaya line, which were decommissioned in October 2023. These coaches have been submerged 18 meters underwater at the bottom of Monkey Bay, now serving as an artificial coral reef.

This project is the first of its kind in Malaysia and has been recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records in the Buildings and Structures category. Divers can explore the interiors of these coaches, which remain largely unchanged from their operational days, complete with seats, overhead handrails, poles, signs, and even carriage numbers on the outside.

Promoting Biodiversity and Tourism

The creation of this underwater LRT coach reef is a collaborative effort between the Tioman Development Board and Yayasan Al-Sultan Abdullah. The submerging process involved 60 divers, led by Tengku Panglima Raja Brigadier General Tengku Amir Nasser Ibrahim Shah. The coaches are under ongoing surveillance to ensure their safety and stability for divers.

Mohd Fakhrul Islam Juhali, General Manager of Yayasan Al-Sultan Abdullah, emphasized that this project aims to attract more tourists while highlighting Pulau Tioman’s commitment to sustainability and marine conservation. The LRT coaches are expected to enhance the marine biodiversity in Tioman’s waters, providing a new habitat for marine life and a unique attraction for divers.

This initiative follows in the footsteps of similar projects worldwide. For instance, the Metropolitan Transit Authority in New York has dropped retired subway cars on the ocean floor to boost recreational fishing and marine life. Pulau Tioman’s LRT coach reef sets a precedent in Malaysia, combining environmental conservation with tourism innovation.

Malaysia continues to unveil new attractions to captivate both local and international tourists. For those seeking a break from the usual LRT train ride, a trip to Pulau Tioman offers the chance to board a train beneath the sea and embark on an unforgettable underwater adventure.
