From 18 to 20 October 2024, the enchanting melodies of Opera in Paradise will once again resonate through the secluded island paradise of Pangkor Laut Resort. Following the overwhelming success and sold-out crowd of its inaugural edition last year, this second edition promises an even more extraordinary experience for its attendees.
The lineup of esteemed artists this year includes returning musical director and renowned flautist Andrea Griminelli, along with multi-album mezzo-soprano Laura Wright, award-winning soprano Cathy-Di Zhang, and celebrated tenor John Longmuir, who has performed over 500 times for Opera Australia.
A Legacy of Excellence and Inspiration
Andrea Griminelli’s connection with Pangkor Laut Resort runs deep, having first visited in 1994 as part of the ensemble accompanying the legendary Luciano Pavarotti. Griminelli fondly recalls Pavarotti’s reaction to the island’s beauty, where the maestro described it as a place that moved him to tears, calling it “paradise.” This profound admiration for the island has drawn Griminelli back numerous times, including for the inauguration of the resort’s spa in 2002.
When the concept of Opera in Paradise was conceived, it was only fitting that Griminelli was invited to be the musical director, given his long-standing relationship with both the resort and the YTL family. Dato’ Mark Yeoh, YTL Corporation’s Executive Director, reminisces about their family’s memories with Pavarotti in Modena, which led to the creation of this unique event. The opera serves as a tribute to Pavarotti, benefiting Hospis Malaysia, and celebrates the maestro’s legacy at the resort, where the highest-tier accommodation is named The Pavarotti Suite.
Star-Studded Performances Amidst Natural Splendor
The stellar lineup for this year’s edition of Opera in Paradise ensures a musical extravaganza that will captivate the audience. Laura Wright, a renowned mezzo-soprano, is known for her performances at high-profile events, including singing for Her Majesty the late Queen Elizabeth II. Her powerful voice and emotive performances have made her a beloved figure in the classical music world.
Joining her is Cathy-Di Zhang, an award-winning soprano who has graced stages worldwide and performed with top Australian companies. Her versatile performances have garnered her acclaim, making her a standout talent in the operatic community. John Longmuir, a celebrated tenor, adds his rich and dynamic voice to the mix. With a career marked by over 500 performances for Opera Australia, Longmuir’s presence guarantees a series of unforgettable performances.
Celebrating Music, Memory, and Mastery
Last year’s Opera in Paradise set a high bar, with Griminelli leading a repertoire that included pieces by Bizet, Morricone, Puccini, and more. American tenor Michael Austin’s rendition of O Paradiso was a highlight, harking back to Pavarotti’s evocative description of the resort. The soprano duo Belle Voci captivated the audience with their harmonious voices, adding a unique touch with the rhythmic waves of the island in the background.
This year, the program promises to be equally mesmerizing. Guests will once again enjoy the charms of Pangkor Laut Resort, from the ‘Pasar Malam Night’ welcome dinner to scenic cocktails at Fisherman’s Cove. The opera performances, set against the stunning natural backdrop of the resort, will transport attendees to a world of musical bliss. The grand finale, featuring Griminelli and Longmuir, promises to be a breathtaking experience, with renditions of O Sole Mio and Verdi’s Brindisi.
Reflecting on the inaugural event, Griminelli expressed his deep emotional connection, noting the joy of bringing together friends and talented musicians in such a beautiful setting. This year’s edition of Opera in Paradise continues that tradition, offering a unique blend of world-class opera and the serene beauty of Pangkor Laut Resort.
