Durex survey unveils alarming gaps in safe sex practices

In a significant revelation, the 2024 Durex Global Sex Survey has brought to light troubling gaps in safe sex practices among Malaysians. Conducted across 36 countries and including 29,500 respondents aged 18 and above, the survey provides a comprehensive overview of sexual health behaviors and attitudes, underscoring the urgent need for improved sexual education and awareness in Malaysia.

One of the most alarming findings from the survey is the low rate of condom usage among Malaysians during their first sexual experience. According to the survey, over half of the respondents (51.77%) did not consider using a condom the first time they had sex. This initial disregard for protection often continues, with only 44% of those who used condoms during their first encounter continuing to do so in subsequent sexual activities. This statistic highlights a significant risk factor for the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies.

Misinformation about sexual health

The survey also revealed widespread misconceptions and a lack of accurate information regarding sexual health. A notable 31.62% of Malaysians believe they cannot contract an STI if they are not engaging in penetrative sex, while 33.88% are uncertain about this fact. Additionally, only 20.36% of respondents are aware that women can get pregnant even when they are on their period. Such gaps in knowledge underscore the need for comprehensive sexual education that addresses these misconceptions and promotes safe sex practices.

Jerome Goh, Head of Marketing, OTC & Intimate Well-being, Malaysia & Singapore, Reckitt, emphasized the critical importance of condoms not just as contraceptives, but as essential tools in preventing STIs and HIV. “Condoms are lifesavers. They are the first line of defense against a host of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Yet, misconceptions and misinformation continue to hinder their widespread use,” he said.

The influence of pornography and trust in partners’ sexual health also emerged as significant factors affecting condom usage. The survey found that pornography and general internet searches are the most common sources of information about sex, yet these are often unreliable. Almost half of the respondents regard watching porn as normal behavior, with those aged 18-24 more likely to note that condoms are rarely depicted in pornographic content. This lack of representation may contribute to unrealistic expectations and a disregard for the necessity of protection.

Furthermore, the overly trusting nature of many individuals in Malaysia was highlighted, with 59.12% either believing or being unsure that there is no need to use a condom when they trust their partner. This misplaced trust can lead to unsafe sexual practices and increased vulnerability to STIs.

The Positive Living Program: A step towards change

In response to these concerning findings, Durex Malaysia and the Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF) have launched the Positive Living Program at Rumah Tangsi. This dual initiative aims to provide comprehensive psychosocial support for newly diagnosed People Living with HIV (PLHIV) and promote sexual health awareness among young Malaysians. Supported by a multi-year grant from Durex Malaysia and implemented by the PT Foundation, the program seeks to enhance the quality of life for newly diagnosed individuals by integrating psychological, medical, social, and economic support.

Associate Professor Dr. Raja Iskandar Shah bin Raja Azwa, President of MAC and Trustee of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation, expressed gratitude towards Durex Malaysia for their support. “Newly diagnosed PLHIV face significant psychological, social, medical, and economic challenges. The initial shock of diagnosis often leads to anxiety, depression, and concerns about stigma and discrimination. The Positive Living Program aims to address these challenges comprehensively,” he stated.

Insights from the panel discussion

The program featured a compelling panel discussion on sexual behaviors, informed by the latest findings from the Durex Global Sex Survey 2024. Moderated by Deborah Henry, a Malaysian TV host, former model, and co-founder of the non-profit charity organization Fugee School, the forum explored advancements in prevention methods such as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), and accessible HIV testing.

Panelists included Dr. Dinesh Mahalingam, Vice President of the Malaysian AIDS Council; Phoenix Ho, Senior Manager of Brand Purpose and Sustainability Malaysia & Singapore, Reckitt; and Dr. Khairil Erwan Khalid, Consultant Infectious Disease Physician at Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

Phoenix Ho delivered a compelling message on the critical importance of condoms in safeguarding sexual health. By highlighting their effectiveness in preventing STIs, HIV, and unintended pregnancies, she reinforced the power of informed choices for a healthier tomorrow.

Dr. Dinesh Mahalingam emphasized that the stigmatization of sex education and open conversation is leading to a rise in HIV infections through sexual transmission compared to injecting drug use based on current data.

Dr. Khairil Khalid shed light on the life-changing importance of maintaining an undetectable viral load in HIV treatment. His insights revealed how this crucial step can prevent transmission, ensuring safer sexual activity and a brighter future for those living with HIV.

With the launch of the Positive Living Program, there is hope for improved awareness and support for safe sex practices.
