Bangkok-Butterworth train service revival to boost tourism

The Bangkok-Butterworth train service is set for revival, marking a significant development in Malaysia-Thailand relations.

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has confirmed that the service will resume, with plans to extend the route from Bangkok Central Station through Padang Besar to Butterworth station.

This decision, announced by SRT’s Chief of the Governor’s Office Ekkarat Sriarayanphong, was finalised during the 42nd Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB)-SRT Joint Conference held in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

Train service revival benefits Penang

The reintroduction of the Bangkok-Butterworth train service is expected to bring substantial benefits to Penang.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has welcomed the development, highlighting its potential to boost the state’s commercial activities and tourism.

“The resumption of this train service will increase visitor numbers and facilitate cargo movement between Malaysia and Thailand,” Chow said.

He believes this will create new business opportunities and offer a unique travel experience, enhancing Penang’s appeal.

Wong Hon Wai, Chairman of the State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee, also expressed optimism.

He noted that the revived train service would positively impact Penang’s tourism sector by attracting more visitors and supporting local businesses.

Malaysia-Thailand expanding rail cooperation

The revival of the Bangkok-Butterworth route is part of a broader plan to enhance rail cooperation between Thailand and Malaysia.

Ekkarat stated that a joint working group will oversee the trial phase, which will last six months.

“This extension is crucial for promoting tourism and increasing income for both countries,” Ekkarat said.

In addition to the main service, the SRT and KTMB are also working to extend the My Sawasdee holiday excursion train route.

Currently, this service operates from Kuala Lumpur to Hat Yai, and it will soon extend to Surat Thani. This extension aims to further boost tourism and provide Malaysians with more travel options.

The meeting in Kota Kinabalu also explored expanding cooperation in freight transport.

The SRT is eager to support cross-border freight operations, including routes such as Padang Besar-Hat Yai Junction. This will facilitate smoother and more efficient trade between the two nations.

The revival of the Bangkok-Butterworth train service represents a significant step forward in Malaysia-Thailand rail cooperation.

It promises to enhance tourism, support commercial activities in Penang, and improve cross-border freight transport. As the trial phase progresses, the extended service is expected to offer numerous benefits to both countries.
