The much-anticipated Penang Miaohui festival, themed “Penang Lang! Let’s Celebrate,” has made its grand return.
Marking its 26th year, the festival kicked off with a dazzling lighting ceremony on New Year’s Day near Armenian Park.
Held in conjunction with Chinese New Year, this annual event will run from Jan 28 and run for 15 days transforming George Town into a hub of culture and festivity.
Penang Miaohui: A showcase of culture
Miaohui, an integral part of Penang’s cultural calendar, celebrates Chinese heritage while embracing the multicultural essence of Malaysia.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow emphasised the festival’s role in promoting cultural roots and innovation.
“This event reflects the strong cooperation between the government and the private sector,” Chow noted, urging younger generations to participate in preserving traditions.
Decorations for the festival will adorn George Town throughout the Spring Festival, culminating in a vibrant street fair.
Over 26 clan organisations will host open houses along 12 streets in the UNESCO George Town World Heritage Site.
Visitors can enjoy over 120 food vendors, 50 interactive booths, and a dynamic lineup of performances and cultural exhibits.
Unity through cultural exchange
Speaking at the launch, Chinese Consul-General Zhou Youbin described Miaohui as “one of the grandest and most iconic festivals in Penang.”
Highlighting the event’s significance, Zhou said, “Chinese New Year embodies the Chinese civilisation’s pursuit of peace, harmony, and unity.”
Zhou also highlighted how Miaohui fosters unity and mutual understanding in Penang’s diverse community.
“This festival is not just a celebration; it’s a tribute to tolerance and shared values,” he remarked.
The event’s spirit aligns with the Year of the Snake’s symbolism of resilience and flexibility, reflecting the deepening China-Malaysia relationship.
He praised Malaysia’s multicultural society, where Chinese traditions thrive alongside other ethnic cultures.
“A single flower does not make spring, but a hundred flowers bloom together,” Zhou said, underscoring the importance of inclusivity and cultural exchange.
Also present were Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying, several state assemblymen, and the chairman of the Penang Chinese Clan Council Ho Swee Choon.
Penang Miaohui continues to be a vibrant celebration of heritage, unity, and community spirit.
