Uncle Kentang’s Facebook post sparks generosity

Uncle Kentang’s Facebook plea for ambulance donations leads to RM600,000 in pledges, showcasing the power of kindness and grassroots humanitarianism.

Social activist Kuan Chee Heng, affectionately known as Uncle Kentang, continues to make waves in Malaysia with his unwavering dedication to helping the less fortunate. His recent call for ambulance donations after a major lottery payout has resulted in two generous donations that will significantly enhance his charity’s efforts.

A Jackpot of Compassion

While the winners of Malaysia’s largest-ever lottery payout, RM121 million from Sports Toto, enjoyed their newfound wealth, Uncle Kentang received a windfall of a different kind. With a lighthearted Facebook post, he called on the lottery winners to each donate an ambulance to his charity, Community Policing Malaysia (CPM). To his delight, his post garnered attention, resulting in two donors stepping forward—one company and two individuals—each pledging to donate an ambulance worth RM300,000.

Within hours of posting, Kuan received calls from the generous donors. “Thank you TOTO, I make a post, and the good and kind people responded. God bless,” he remarked, expressing his gratitude for the unexpected but welcome gifts. The two individuals deposited RM100,000 upfront, with the balance to be settled upon the delivery of the ambulances, which will go a long way in supporting the charity’s vital work.

Despite some criticisms for his unorthodox methods, Kuan’s sense of humor and dedication have always resonated with kind-hearted Malaysians who are eager to support his cause. The success of this campaign is just one example of the powerful impact of Kuan’s grassroots approach to charity.

From Humble Beginnings to Heartfelt Service

Born in 1963 in Selangor, Kuan Chee Heng’s upbringing in a modest household shaped his worldview. Raised by a lorry driver father and a mother who believed in helping neighbors, Kuan was instilled with values of empathy and generosity from an early age. His mother often cooked extra meals for the community, reinforcing the importance of giving to those in need.

These formative years left a lasting impression on Kuan, nurturing a deep sense of responsibility to help others. His personal and professional life would later reflect this calling, as Kuan began his humanitarian journey in the late 1990s following a personal tragedy. He found solace in helping those less fortunate and quickly became a trusted figure in his community.

A Legacy of Selfless Giving

Uncle Kentang’s charity, CPM, is now a vital part of Malaysia’s social landscape, offering free ambulance services, funeral assistance, and emergency relief to those in crisis. With a fleet of 22 ambulances and a dedicated team of 30 paramedics and first aiders, CPM operates as a lifeline for many marginalized communities across the country. Kuan’s unique approach involves hands-on involvement, ensuring that help is given without the bureaucratic delays that often hinder large organizations.

Every month, CPM handles approximately 1,500 cases, ranging from transporting the sick to addressing funeral costs. As Kuan explains, “If I don’t help, who will?”

This philosophy drives his work and his commitment to those in need, particularly individuals with terminal illnesses who cannot afford private ambulance services. The availability of CPM ambulances ensures that people can receive medical attention, regardless of their financial situation.

Behind Kuan’s tireless work is the unwavering support of his family. Despite the demands of his charitable efforts, Kuan is a father of three and credits his family for enabling his humanitarian work. In a world often focused on self-interest, Kuan’s personal sacrifices and unwavering commitment to helping others demonstrate that significant change can start with a single act of generosity.
