Cheras LeisureMall celebrates 30 years of growth

Cheras LeisureMall marks 30 years as a beloved community hub with upgrades and rewards for loyal shoppers in its grand celebration.

Cheras LeisureMall recently marked a major milestone with its 30th anniversary celebration, reaffirming its place as one of the most beloved neighbourhood malls in the Klang Valley. Held on 27 April 2025, the celebration saw 30 lucky shoppers walking away with prizes worth over RM200,000 as part of The Grand 30 Giveaway live draw event.

For three decades, the mall has evolved from a retail pioneer into a vibrant hub for shopping, dining and community life, continuously adapting to changing trends while preserving its unique charm and nostalgic appeal.

A pillar of community

Since opening its doors in 1995, Cheras LeisureMall has stood as a landmark in Taman Segar, Cheras. As one of the first malls in the region, it introduced new standards in retail and leisure with its indoor amusement park, bowling alley, and cinema—making it a central point for family outings and community gatherings.

Despite its more compact 280,000 square feet of net lettable area compared to larger malls, it has remained a community favourite with consistently high occupancy rates, even bouncing back post-pandemic to 96%. Key to its success has been its ability to retain long-standing tenants such as McDonald’s, Guardian, Eu Yan Sang, Baskin-Robbins, and Popular, all of which continue to serve loyal, multi-generational patrons.

Over time, Cheras LeisureMall has adapted to shifting market demands by diversifying its retail and F&B offerings. Recent additions include Food City, Old Nanyang Café, and one of the largest ZUS Coffee outlets in the country. The growing demand for tech has also led to the opening of stores such as Huawei, HONOR and Realme.

Modernisation and sustainability

The adjacent Cheras Plaza, which began as Chujitsu department store in 1987, continues to complement the mall’s offerings. Having undergone major refurbishment in 2023—including a sleek new façade, upgraded lifts, and a cashless parking system—Cheras Plaza now houses tenants such as Hua Yuan Seafood and Sing V Karaoke, alongside office spaces.

Cheras LeisureMall’s commitment to sustainability was evident as early as 2009, when it became one of the first malls in Malaysia to install rooftop solar panels. In 2024, the mall expanded its solar capacity with 1,440 additional panels to further reduce its carbon footprint. Other green initiatives include the REplace Project, which encourages recycling and eco-conscious habits through designated recycling zones and a bag-sharing corner.

Plans are also underway to enhance the mall’s ambiance through strategic upgrades, including new alfresco dining areas and revamped entrances to improve visitor experience.

Cherished traditions

Throughout its 30-year journey, the mall has remained at the heart of community celebrations and traditions. From acrobatic lion dances during Chinese New Year to the annual Christmas Toy Bank drive, these cultural events continue to draw families and build strong neighbourhood ties.

The Mid-Autumn Lantern Competition, a signature event since 1996, achieved national recognition in 2024 with a Malaysia Book of Records title for the most handpainted lanterns by children, featuring over 1,500 lanterns from 14 schools.

Beyond festivals, the mall frequently hosts safety campaigns, pet adoption drives, and blood donation events—strengthening its role as a socially responsible community space.

Looking ahead, Cheras LeisureMall is poised to continue evolving, with new digital initiatives such as the PLAYCE loyalty app, aimed at enriching the shopping experience and reinforcing tenant collaboration. As it enters its fourth decade, the mall remains committed to delivering meaningful experiences and growing alongside the Cheras community.
