As Malaysia commemorates its 68th Merdeka Day this year, the meaning of freedom extends beyond the struggles of nation-building. True independence, many say, lies in recognising the dignity of every individual – the right to be seen, heard, and celebrated.
In this spirit, Galeri Kita is set to launch “Discovering A Beautiful Mind” (DABM), a landmark 12-day art showcase and workshop series that will run from 3 to 14 September 2025 at the Curve, Mutiara Damansara. More than just an exhibition, the event seeks to create an inclusive national art movement that celebrates creativity without boundaries.
A national movement of inclusivity
Organised by Galeri Kita in collaboration with Artists’ Corner, the showcase will unite 50 artists – both neurodivergent, including individuals with autism, ADHD and dyslexia, and neurotypical – in a groundbreaking collaboration. Unlike initiatives framed through a charity lens, “Discovering A Beautiful Mind” emphasises equality, talent, and shared expression.
“Art has always had the power to liberate and connect, to bring dignity, voice, and belonging to those who have long been left unseen,” said Dato’ Aminuddin Abdul Manaf, Chairman of Galeri Kita.
“From New York’s Outsider Art Fair celebrating unconventional creators, to Tokyo’s inclusive art festivals that spotlight artists across abilities, and to London’s Tate Modern opening its halls to community-led exhibits, the universal language of creativity continues to transcend barriers and labels.” he said.
He added that the movement aims to shift Malaysia’s national narrative: “From ‘they are different’ to ‘we create together’. From inclusion on paper, to genuine co-creation in real spaces. From art as mere expression, to art as empowerment.”
Immersive experiences for all
Beyond admiring paintings, sculptures, and installations, visitors will be invited to participate in interactive art zones and hands-on workshops. These experiences are designed to highlight the universal nature of creativity while encouraging families, students, and communities to discover how collaboration can thrive without borders.
Organisers expect nearly 450,000 visitors throughout the two-week event, offering both an enriching cultural experience and a meaningful opportunity for brands and organisations to align with global priorities on inclusion and empowerment.
Supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, the event will also feature works by renowned names such as Artjamila, Krithin Paul, and Harris Ribut.
Merdeka spirit reimagined
As Malaysia reflects on 68 years of independence, DABM is positioned as a timely reminder of what Merdeka truly means – the freedom to create, to be acknowledged, and to belong.
The exhibition emphasises that true independence lies in building a society where unity in diversity becomes a lived reality, expressed through collaboration and shared creativity. It highlights how art can serve as both a bridge and a platform for inclusion.
Galeri Kita is inviting Malaysians from all walks of life to step into this movement. Admission is free, and visitors are encouraged to witness the extraordinary works, join the workshops, and support a cause that redefines the way society views art, inclusion, and each other.
