As the nation settles into its 68th year of independence, Selangor’s Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM Selangor) has underscored a vital message: safety and resilience begin at the community level. This was the core theme of the Program Bomba Komuniti, a day-long initiative that blended ceremonial recognition, practical empowerment and patriotic spirit in equal measure.
From the early morning arrivals of participants and local leaders to the formal address by JBPM Selangor Director YS PKPjB Wan Md Razali bin Wan Ismail, the programme emphasised shared responsibility in safeguarding communities. The Director reminded attendees that preparedness cannot rest on one agency alone but must be rooted in collective vigilance and coordinated training.
Central to the event were three symbolic handovers that transformed policy into practical readiness. Twelve Bomba Komuniti units across Selangor received boats and water-safety kits to bolster flood response. A Perodua vehicle was presented to support operational mobility, while a formal promotion ceremony recognised the dedication and professionalism of JBPM officers. These moments reflected both investment in resources and recognition of service.
Strengthening community readiness
The programme maintained a disciplined flow, alternating between ceremonial proceedings and hands-on demonstrations. The morning featured a patriotic opening with national and departmental anthems, followed by the Director’s address around 9:30 am. Symbolic handovers took place mid-morning, with the Perodua vehicle delivered at 11:00 am. At 11:30 am, applause marked the Pemakaian tanda pangkat, honouring officers elevated in rank.
By midday, the attention shifted to the main lobby where the twelve boats were formally handed over to community representatives. Recipients included grassroots organisations in Sungai Buloh, Klang, Dengkil, Hulu Rening, Felda Gedangsa and Sungai Besar, among others. Eight additional Bomba Komuniti groups are expected to receive their boats in September, extending the network of local readiness.
These assets carry more than practical value. For flood-prone communities, they represent faster rescues, safer evacuations and an added layer of security when waters rise. For JBPM Selangor, the initiative demonstrates that resilience must be anchored at the neighbourhood level, with trained volunteers and resources ready to act when needed.
Patriotism anchored in preparedness
The finale tied safety with national pride. At 1:00 pm, the hall resounded with Lagu Jalur Gemilang, Lagu Malaysia Madani: Rakyat di Santuni, and Lagu 31 Ogos. As flags waved, an explanation of the Jalur Gemilang’s symbols reinforced the connection between unity, courage, loyalty and harmony. The patriotic segment served not only as a closing celebration but also as a reminder that resilience is part of the nation’s identity.
The programme concluded with a luncheon where community leaders, first-responders and corporate partners exchanged ideas in a more informal setting. Conversations over shared tables reflected the essence of the initiative: a partnership that extends beyond ceremony to practical collaboration.
For JBPM Selangor, Program Bomba Komuniti was not simply an event but a statement of intent. By equipping communities and honouring those who serve, the department reinforced the principle that independence is safeguarded not only through celebration, but through preparedness, solidarity and shared responsibility.
