What to expect from this Turandot

The staging marks 100 years since the opera’s La Scala premiere on 25 April 1926, The Rakyat Post noted.

It uses Franco Alfano’s completion of the opera, with the story set in ancient Beijing, The Star said.

The singing is in Italian with English and Chinese surtitles, BroadwayWorld reported. The show runs about 165 minutes, including a 20-minute interval. It is recommended for ages six and above.

Bernama said Italian conductor Alessandro Mazzocchetti leads a 50-piece orchestra and a 70-member chorus. Amelia Tan directs.

Costumes are by Kel Wen of Behati, a Malaysian fashion house, Bernama said.

The opera includes the aria “Nessun dorma”, KL City Opera’s website notes. Turandot tickets cover the full opera, with one interval.

In the second cast, Eleanor Greenwood sings Turandot and Gui Foo Chen sings Calaf. Ang Mei Foong is Liu.

KL City Opera describes the casts as Malaysian and international artists. Three bel canto students from the Wuhan Conservatory of Music are rehearsing with its singers, Xinhua reported.

Baritone Zhang Enrui told Xinhua the environment offers rich opportunities for cultural exchange. Check the CloudJoi page for your date, as casts can change.

Turandot’s return after more than 20 years

KL City Opera says Turandot returns to the Malaysian stage after more than 20 years, on its website. Bernama and The Star repeat the line.

The production has the support of the Embassy of Italy. It is part of the Week of the Italian Language in the World, Bernama said.

Ambassador Raffaele Langella called opera one of the most representative expressions of Italy’s artistic heritage.

None of those reports names the earlier Malaysian production or its year. CJ.MY could not confirm it, so the claim stays with the company. Turandot tickets are for the company’s new staging.

Business Today described the cast as fully Malaysian. KL City Opera and CloudJoi list Malaysian and international artists, so we follow them.
