PMR 2011: 47 SMK Taman SEA students score straight As

The scene at the school hall of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman SEA in Jalan 21/37 SEA Park, Petaling Jaya was one of joy and happiness with the school’s Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) 2011 or Lower Secondary Assessment exam result achieving a better GPS of 1.93 (2.05 last year) with 47 straight As students (8A’s 20, 7A’s 27) compared to 38 (8A’s 19, 7A’s 19) last year.

This school being one of the nine high-performing schools in the Daerah Petaling Utama district, (total 83 schools) achieved an overall pass rate of 87.46% (91.41% last year).

“I am proud of my students’ achievement. However we are not satisfied yet. We want more students to do well to beat the best schools.” said SMK Taman SEA principal Siti Masrah Napiah, who was transferred from Johor Bahru and joined the school in July last year.

The Gred Purata Sekolah (GPS) or School Average Grade measures the students achievement such as the numbers of A, B, C, D the students scored. A lower GPS with 1 point indicates better results than with 6 points.

“Last year our school produced the national top student (Pelajar Cemerlang Negara) with 10A+ in the SPM exam and we are really proud of his achievement.”

On advice for the students, she said: “I congratulate the students who got straight As and made the school proud, I hope they will continue to study hard to achieve top grades again in their SPM exam in two years times and for those who didn’t do so well, do not worry or feel despair because you can improve your result in SPM.”

On the issue of language to be used in Science and Mathematics subjects when these students go into Form Four next year, she said: “We will provide them the textbooks in both languages and if they choose to use English, they can return the textbooks printed in Bahasa Malaysia. I have no problem. I believe the students here prefer to use English for both the subjects.”

For school prefect Ng Li Xin who slogged five hours a day consistently everyday, her hard work and sacrifices paid off.

“I had expected at most 6As but getting 8As ia a sweet surprise,” said a delighted Li Xin whose ambition is to become a heart surgeon one day.

Another student Wong Vui Yean who scored only 6As said she is satisfied with the result she got.

“I thought the Bahasa Malaysia paper was a little tough for me but it really prepared me for the subject. I scored an A for it!”

A total of 481,292 candidates sat for the PMR examination in October this year at 3,521 examination centres throughout the country this year.

For the first time this year, candidates can check their PMR results via mySMS 15888 which are activated from 10 am from today until midnight on Dec 28.
