Police detained five motorcycle riders for participating in an unlawful assembly to protest against the Penang government.
Timur Laut district police chief ACP Gan Kong Meng said those detained included Pertubuhan Islam Gabungan Amal (PERTIGA) chairman Sabaruddin Ahmad.
He said the five riders were detained to facilitate police investigation and that they would be released after their statements were recorded.
Police believed the demonstration was organised by several non-governmental organisations in the state, he added.
Meanwhile, a Bernama survey found that about 200 motorcyclists, clad in yellow T-shirts with “Selamatkan Pulau Pinang, LGE Rasis” (Safe Penang, LGE Racist) written on them, were involved in the demonstration.
They began their show of protest about noon at Jalan Penang and then rode to the Tun Abdul Razak Complex (Komtar) where they circled the building three times and then gathered in front of the main exit where they began to honk their motorcycles for 30 minutes.
The group then rode to the Penang state legislative assembly before they dispersed after being ordered to do so by the police.
