World Press Photo will be stationed in Bangsar Shopping Complex Annex starting from August 14, 2013, exhibiting press photography from all over the world.

World Press Photo (WPP) is an international independent non-profit organization based in Amsterdam, Netherlands that is known for having one of the most distinguished annual press photography contests in the world.

WPP prides themselves on supporting and advancing visual journalism worldwide through their contest, exhibitions, and educational journalism programs.

Currently at its first stop in the country, the exhibition’s Malaysian tour was launched on 24 July 2013 in Penang by the state’s Chief Minister YAB Tuan Lim Guan Eng, and will be on display at the Performing Arts Centre of Penang (Penang PAC) in Straits Quay until 11 August 2013.

The exhibition will then make its way to Bangsar Shopping Centre (BSC) in Kuala Lumpur where it will be showcased for the residents of the Klang Valley.

“With Bangsar as an ideal area that’s equally accessible to both the residents of Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya, BSC could not be a better temporary home for the prestigious exhibition,” said Mr Chong Siang Chung, Managing Director of TNT Express Malaysia.

Some of the most defining photographs have been winners of WPP like Charlie Cole’s photograph of the singular student in front of three tanks at Tiananmen Square in 1989.

This image was passed around the world inspiring courage and invoking a deep sense of tragedy after the protest was suppressed with a death toll 2,000 people.

The archive of WPP is a testament to events like these. As an organization, WPP, commits the belief that quality photo and documentary journalism has the power to influence and touch people.

Last year World Press Photo displayed an exhibition of over 160 award winning photos including that of Malaysian photographers in Kuala Lumpur. This year the exhibition will show Dr. Cheng Wei Seng who won first place in the Sports Action category with his photograph “Joy at the End of the Run”.

TNT Malaysia Express along with the Embassy of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands will be hosting the exhibition.  It will come to Kuala Lumpur on August 7th at Bangsar Shopping center and be hosted by Ton Mandemaker from the Netherlands Embassy and Chong Siang Chung from TNT Malaysia Express.

Along with sense of national pride on having Malaysians representing their point of view at the exhibition, the event is an exciting opportunity to see photographs that excel in their visual image and story telling from all over the world.

The stories that World Press Photo carries with them to each nation and each exhibition show the universe in a blade of grass. From the transients of Johannesburg to the teenage girls of suburban America lies a story of profound depth and nuance that surpasses and inspires the imagination.

So yes, we’re excited about the exhibition coming to Malaysia because thus far it’s the best way to see the world without leaving the country.
