Kampung Sungai Melayu: The bird transit point

JOHOR BAHRU – Since the launch of Iskandar project, this village has been a favourite stop for bird lovers watching migratory birds.

Some 70 people were brought on a mission to search migratory birds in Kampung Sungai Melayu by Iskandar Region Development Authority (IRDA) and Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), recently.

The excursion which took them on a boat ride along Kampung Sungai Melayu, a small village, which seen as a having potential to be developed as holiday resort under Iskandar project.

Village headman Pandak told CJMY that the small village is home to some 700 people.

Since the launch of Iskandar project, this village has been a favourite stop for bird lovers watching migratory birds.

Many felt that through the development of the village as a holiday resort will help increase the income for the residents.

Amelia, who participated in the excursion said that this initiative will provide an opportunity for the residents to earn a living, since  the development of Iskandar region which has indefinitely polluted the rivers and affected the livelihood of the local fisherman .
