Pendet Dance Controversy

Despite sharing ethnic, cultural and religious identities, Indonesia and Malaysia – both predominantly Muslim – have been embroiled in occasional disputes over matters such the treatment of migrant workers, territorial disputes and, more recently, cultural icons.

The latest controversy is not the first time that Indonesians have been up in arms over the perceived theft of their cultural icons. A similar spat erupted two years ago over the use of the Indonesian folk song ‘Rasa Sayang’ in another Malaysian tourism advertisement.

Malaysia has apologised for the use of the Balinese Pendet dance, claiming that the mistake was made by a production house paid by Malaysia’s Tourism Ministry to produce the commercial, which has since been withdrawn.

But the apology and explanation failed to mollify Indonesians.

respecting beliefs of others

Kuching, Sarawak one of the most charming towns in Malaysia is simply unique offering such a romantic and unlikely history.

For such a vast state, Sarawaks population of about 2 million with fascinating and diverse mix of almost thirty ethnic groups. The population is mainly composed of the Iban tribe (one-third of the population) with a mix of Chinese and Malays while the Bidayuh, Melanau and the Orang Ulu comprise a minority of the population.

Reflecting the wide mixture of ethnic groups in Sarawak, religion in the state is both tolerant and diverse. Islam is the official religion. However, Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and animism are also represented and respected.

Sarawakians in particular felt that the Race Relation Act was mooted in the parliament recently was totally unnecessary because racial integration and religious tolerance has never been an issue in the state.
In fact some of the Sawarakian felt that Introducing the Race Relationship Act is like mending something that is not broken which serves to awaken the feeling that they have to go out of their way to accept their differences when acceptance of their racial and religious diversity already exists so naturally among them.

The ease different races in Sarawak interact with each other remarkable, it seldom occur to us that this aspect of our society is something unique and admirable.

From the interviewed, citizen journalist R.Rajes noticed that the respect and support accorded from each other has been going on for years without fanfare. Perhaps its time to share their story with fellow Malaysians to show what religious tolerance truly means.
