Till Feb 16, only 16.4 per cent or 37,604 out of 226,000 Proton cars without rear seat belts have been brought in for free installation of the safety belts even though the offer for this was made by Proton Holdings Berhad in January 2009.

Proton Holdings Berhad managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said the number was very disappointing as it showed that many Proton car owners did not take the matter seriously.

Proton car owners have only until June 1 to get their cars installed with the rear seat belts for free, he told reporters after attending a public campaign on the use of helmets here today.
