Duck farmer contests eviction notice

Viatak Enterprise Company Sdn. Bhd. which has been operating for the past 40 years in Kota Baru, Perak has been slapped with an eviction notice to vacate the farm recently.

The duck and fish breeder, which has been producing 240,000 ducks and 280 tonnes of fish annually, was founded by Leong Yeow Tuck in 1979.

Today, Leong Yew Siang, is racing against time to save the land as he is about to lose an empire built by his father over 40 years ago.

According to Leong, his father had been applying for the land they had been working on in Kota Baru for decades but to no avail.

In 2009, a public listed company was awarded 961ha of land for agricultural development with the condition that 24ha was rented out to Viatak Enterprise for it to continue running its business.

Two years down the road, tables have turned and Viatek Enterprise is left with no choice but to seek the intervention of the Perak state government to help resolve matters between the two parties.

About 65 employees working for Viatak Enterprise are about to lose their livelihood.

He told Komunitikini, that he was asked by the Land and Mines department to attend a meeting with the said listed company on Wednesday.

“I hope to solve the problem amicably,” Leong said, confirming that he would be attending the meeting.
