The Lighthouse – is a drop-in centre for the street and poor people in Penang.

The Lighthouse – A Place of Hope is a drop-in centre for the street and poor people, run by the Diocese of Penang. It is located at Penang Road (next to the Cititel Hotel).

Recently, as in previous years, the Shangri-La Group of Hotels, hosted a Chinese New Year celebration for the Lighthouse clients (those who drop in to avail themselves of Lighthouse’s facilities are refer to as ‘clients’).

The management and staff of the Shangri-La Group of Hotels were present at the Lighthouse to join in the Lighthouse clients and volunteers. There was a lion dance performance, with the God of Prosperity in tow.

After the lion dance performance, the manager of the Lighthouse, Belevendram and the Director of the Lighthouse, Gerard Robless, gave a short speech. Belevendram welcome everyone and Robless thanked the Shangri-La Group of Hotels for their support. Elaine Yue, the general manager of Rasa Sayang Hotel & Spa too entertained with a speech.

The Shangri-La Group of Hotels sponsored a 25 kg chocolate cake and a giant platter of Yee Sang. Gerard Robless, Elaine Yue and the HotelssStaff, together with Lighthouse clients whose birthday falls in January, cut the cake and joined in for the tossing of Yee Sang.

The food, which consist of five delicious specialities were prepared by master chefs from Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa. They provided a special nutmeg syrup drink to go with the food.

As the clients departed, they were given a goody bag, filled with two oranges, sponsored by Shangri-La Group of Hotels and an angpow packet sponsored by donor, Sally Ow.
