Thousand lanterns light up Tan Hiok Nee Cultural Street

Johor Bahru Tiong-Hua Chinese Association (JBTHCA) will be organising series of events, with the lighting ceremony at the Tan Hiok Nee cultural street as being the first of it, in the build up towards the Chinese New Year.

The JBTHCA president, Lim Ik Kim, said that Johor Bahru’s Chinese New Year celebration will attract the attention of local and foreign tourist.

He also mentioned that satellite TV operator, ASTRO will broadcast live from the Tan Hiok Nee cultural street on the eve of Chinese New Year.

According to Lim, Prime Minister Najib Razak had promised to attend the Grand Chingay night in Johor Bahru.

The lantern lighting ceremony at the 100-years old street was carried out by the Johor Bahru’s Chinese community leaders, witnessed by 500 visitors. Later, popular Chinese singer, Ang Pei Qun and Ma Yao group delighted the crowd with their performances.

Meanwhile, the Teochew province government will be sending the “108 Ying Go Dance Hero” performers to Johor Bahru in conjunction with the Friendship Treaty, which will be signed between Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru and the city of Shantou.
