The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) participated in Indonesia’s “Hari Nusantara”, which celebrates the country’s status as an archipelago, in Dumai, Indonesia, yesterday.

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the Royal Thai Navy also took part in the celebrations, according to a statement issued by the Singapore Ministry of Defence.

As part of the programme, a sail-past and fly-past were held to mark the cooperation of the regional states in the Melaka Strait Patrols (MSP) initiative, it said.

Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand cooperate in the MSP initiative, comprising the Melaka Strait sea patrols, the “Eye-in-the-Sky” air patrols as well as the Intelligence Exchange Group, making up a set of practical measures which have been effective in enhancing the security of the straits of Melaka and Singapore.

This is the first time that Indonesia has invited countries from around the region to participate in the Hari Nusantara celebrations, which have been held since 2001.
