Internet broadband penetration in Sabah has reached 33 percent, exceeding the 25 percent target set by the federal government.
Deputy Chief Minister Dr Yee Moh Chai said this proves that the federal government listens to complaints from the people and state leaders who want to see increased broadband penetration.
Yee who is also Human Resource Development and Information Technology Minister hopes that the federal government will take proactive steps to ensure that Sabahans enjoy similar broadband penetration to those in the peninsula.
“Otherwise, we will continue to be critical as the 1Malaysia concept emphasises the importance of equality,” he said after launching Sabah ICT Month 2011 at Wisma Bandaraya, today.
Broadband penetration for homes in peninsula has reached over 50 percent and the rate is expected to rise with growth of information communication technology (ICT).
Sabah ICT Month is organised by the ministry with cooperation of federal and state government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGO) and the ICT industry.
They include Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Sabah Computer Services Department, Sabah Computer Society, Sabah West Coast Association (SATA), Multimedia Development Corporation (MDC), Sabah West Coast Autism Association, Sabah Education Department and KKIPC Sdn Bhd.
Themed “Digitalising Sabah: Creating the Wave 2.0,” it is to motivate and recognise ICT players with 28 activities lined-up for students, youths, the elderly and disabled.
