Jalur Gemilang-adorned fishing boats shine in parade

Fishing boats adorned with the Jalur Gemilang sail proudly, uniting communities in patriotic spirit for upcoming Malaysia Day celebrations.

In a colorful display of patriotism, thirty fishing boats adorned with the Jalur Gemilang, the Malaysian national flag, embarked on a 15-kilometer convoy from Serkam Jetty to Kuala Merlimau Jetty today. This vibrant parade, a highlight of the Semarak Gemilang 2023 Jasin District Level program, aims to enliven the upcoming Malaysia Day celebrations on September 16.

The parade of these beautifully decorated boats served as the crowning moment of the Semarak Gemilang 2023 Jasin District Level program, hosted at the picturesque Kuala Merlimau Jetty. Local fishermen joined hands with 17 state government agencies to participate in this patriotic spectacle, as they sailed in unison aboard 30 boats adorned with the Jalur Gemilang. This display was aimed at rekindling the spirit of patriotism, not only to celebrate Independence Day but also in anticipation of the rapidly approaching Malaysia Day.

The Semarak Gemilang 2023 Merdeka Boat Competition found its victor in Azman Shah Fuad Shah, a 33-year-old participant, who showcased exceptional craftsmanship and patriotism in his boat decoration.

Fueling the local economy

YB Datuk Dr. Muhammad Akmal Bin Saleh, EXCO of Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security and Merlimau Assemblyman, graced the event as the guest of honor. He inaugurated the program and highlighted its significance in promoting patriotism among the participants. He also encouraged district fishing associations to explore downstream industries, including securing land at the upcoming second Permanent Food Production Park (TKPM) in Machap, Alor Gajah. This 12.14-hectare project aims to provide fishermen with an alternative income source through agriculture during times when their fishing activities are hampered by unfavorable weather conditions.

Furthermore, Dr. Muhamad Akmal Saleh emphasized the state government’s focus on developing cockle and mussel farms in the waters of Merlimau and Sebatu, which have already begun to yield positive results in supplementing fishermen’s income.

Melaka Information Department director Shahrom Ravin Daram Abdullah’s presence underscored the event’s importance for the local community and the nation as a whole.
