The Royal Malaysian Customs have detected ?121 vehicles which were registered in Langkawi, but had been used on the mainland with unpaid tax since 2004.
Kedah Customs director Abd Aziz Abdul Latif said each vehicle registered in Langkawi was only allowed to be on the mainland for a period not exceeding 90 days or tax would be imposed on the vehicles.
Hence, he said the Customs, with the cooperation from the Road Transport Department (RTD), would track down the owners of the vehicles.
“We have the list of the vehicles. They are not only in Kedah, but also in other states nationwide.? “The tax imposed on the errant owners are based on the current value. If the owner have only overstayed their welcome without actually residing in the mainland, they will only be issued with a compound fine,” he said.
Meanwhile, Abd Aziz said Kedah Customs had also achieved its target in revenue collection by registering RM616 million compared with the target of?RM598 million set last year.
“We hope this year we will be able to achieve our target of RM707 million in import and excise duty collection,” he said, adding that 274 arrests were made by the Customs last year, involving unpaid tax of RM2.65 million.? Earlier, Abd Aziz officially received the duties of Kedah Customs Director from Saadon Mohd Dros, who will take over as the new Kuala Lumpur Customs Director, in a simple hand-over of duty ceremony, here today.
