Malaysian badminton coach, Hendrawan, wrote on his Instagram that there are much bigger things than a match: love, respect and humanity.
On June 30, 2022, Hendrawan stepped up to give his shoes to Jamaica national champion Samuel Rickets to continue the match against Malaysian player Ng Tze Yong during the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Earlier, during the match, Rickets had issues continuing the match due to the damaged shoes.
Tze Yong initially offered his shoes, but it wasn’t the correct size.
Then Hendrawan passed his shoes after seeing Rickets at the sideline trying to fix the shoes.
Rickets continued the match while Hendrawan watched from the sideline in his socks.
Nevertheless, Rickets lost to Tze Yong, 21-12, 21-16.
Rickets then continued playing with Hendrawan’s shoes in the mixed doubles match.
Malaysia defeated Jamaica 5-0,
Hendrawan also wrote that he didn’t want Rickets to stop the match just because of his damaged shoes.
“I gave him my shoes so he can continue his dream of playing,” wrote Hendrawan, the former world champion.
Former Malaysian number one and world champion Datuk Lee Chong Wei posted on his Facebook that is the true nature of Hendrawan.
“He is a very good person, never once shied away from assisting anyone,” Chong Wei wrote.
