Learn the Mah Meri art of ‘mengkuang’ weaving

The ‘Mengkuang’ weaving art form has been passed on from generation to generation for centuries within the Mah Meri tribe in Pulau Carey.

Gerimis Gallery will be organising the Mah Meri mengkuang weaving art next weekend at the GMBB Mall Bukit Bintang.

Reka-Reka will be the venue for the three-hour workshop on August 20 and August 21, 2022.

The fee for the session is RM120 per person. The workshop can accommodate a maximum of 15 pax a day.

The facilitators of the workshop will receive the fee collection after the deduction of the organising cost.

Mah Meri master weaver Maznah Unyan and her group of weavers of Tompoq Tompoh will facilitate the workshop.

Maznah Unyan is based in Pulau Carey, Selangor. In 2015, she was the Ministry of Tourism & Culture declared her a National Heritage & Living Legend.

She established Tompoq Topoh or the Mah Meri Women’s First Weave Initiative to sell and promote traditional handicrafts.

”Tompoq” translates as the start of a weave’. Meanwhile, ”Tompoh” is an interlocking mat pattern.

Thus “Tompoq Tompoh” translates as the start of a collaborative effort.

This weaving form has been passed on from generation to generation for centuries within the Mah Meri tribe.

The fees include materials and coffee from Jiak Kopi. You can bring home your creations after the workshop!
