The T4YP ensemble of 2022 presents an experimental and highly interactive texted work as part of their Final Showcase.

The piece features a rotating cast that changes performance to performance, flexible seating, and involves the audience’s participation to bring to life the production in Pentas 2, klpac.

The work explores themes such as exploitation, matters of class, and justice and invites the audience to examine the systems that keep them running.

The Exception and the Rule (in German Die Ausnahme und die Regel) is a short play by German playwright Bertolt Brecht and is one of several Lehrstücke (Teaching plays) he wrote around 1929/30. It tells the story of a wealthy merchant who must cross the fictional Jahi Desert to close an oil deal.

The class differences between him and his working-class porter are shown during the trip.

T4YP 2022 Ensemble, directed by Tung Jit Yang, will perform in The Exception and the Rule. Inspired by Brecht’s theories of Lehrstücke and epic theatre – this Pentas 2 production is interactive, features a rotating cast that changes from show to show, and requires the audience to participate in and engage with the performance.

Young people are the future of Malaysian Theatre and our country. We are driven by the idea that the arts can inspire creative, courageous and confident young people wherever they are and whatever they want to be.

In 2008, klpac launched its landmark youth theatre programme, Theatre for Young People (T4YP), which is now Malaysia’s longest-running English language youth theatre training programme.

klpac’s iconic Theatre for Young People (T4YP) programme provides those between 18 and 25 with almost 300 hours of intensive and holistic theatre training, free of charge, through masterclasses by the industry’s top experts, mentorship and performance opportunities.

T4YP

Since 2008, 166 young thespians have benefited from the programme, and T4YP has toured Sabah, Singapore and Russia. T4YP has been a regular feature in past Asian Youth Theatre Festival and Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival editions.
