The Selangor state government spent nearly RM 1 million to cover the bus fare for more than 3,000 Indian students in Tamil vernacular school this year, said Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Amiruddin Shari.
The bus fare ensures that students from the Indian community face obstacles in pursuing knowledge.
“Recipient students get RM300 per person, with the distribution process completed. These are students from B40 low-income families,” Amirudin said.
He was speaking at the closing ceremony of the Selangor Indian Empowerment and Entrepreneurs Development (i-SEED) Carnival in Dataran Chetty, which ran from October 7 until yesterday, October 9.
The Menteri Besar added the state government has allocated over RM5 million in the past several years to aid some 97 Tamil vernacular schools throughout Selangor.
“There is not a single SJKT who did not receive this donation. We have distributed aid to all the schools in Selangor to improve the education quality,” he said.
In May, Amirudin announced that RM26.5 million would be allocated to improve the state’s primary and secondary schools’ infrastructure.
The funds are explicitly for schools without full assistance from the Federal government.
Some 100 entrepreneurs from the Selangor Indian Empowerment and Entrepreneurs Development (i-SEED) programme participated in the i-SEED Deepavali Carnival.
State executive councillor for socio-economic development V Ganabatirau said the carnival would bring together all of the entrepreneurs who have received equipment aid from the state government since last year.
“The carnival runs from 10 am until 10 pm and offers a variety of products for sale, such as food, clothing, and others.
“There will also be booths from other state government agencies such as KoHijrah, the Selangor Indian Entrepreneur Development (Sitham) and many more,” he said at a press conference at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC).
Meanwhile, Ganabatirau said that 417 entrepreneurs had received business equipment aid through i-SEED, involving annual funding of RM1 million.
Out of the total, he said that 211 entrepreneurs received assistance this year, while the remaining 216 received it last year.
