December is not only the time of the year for Santa Claus, presents in boxes, and fairy lights. This holiday season, klpac brings you the greatest gift of all that can be shared with friends and families. Mark your dates for a wondrous musical, Christmas Extravaganza, which previews on 8 December and runs from 9 until 11 December 2022 at Pentas 1, klpac.
Three long years in the making, this massive concert bringing together more than 150 singers and musicians is well worth the wait.
“Believe it or not, we started pre-production in 2019, but the pandemic put everything on hold. Even though it involved many different parties, everyone agreed to wait, and we are beyond excited to share this with everyone,” said Ian Chow, director of Christmas Extravaganza.
Joining hands with Chow is co-director Dato’ Dr Faridah Merican. Merican will also be lending her voice as the narrator of the much-anticipated concert, sharing her memories of Christmas as a child right up to the present after marrying the love of her life Joe Hasham OAM.
The concert is massive because it brings together three orchestras – The klpac Orchestra, The klpac Symphonic Band and The klpac String Orchestra – under the baton of their respective resident conductors, Lee Kok Leong, Cheryl Mah, and Andrea Sim. On top of that, it will also feature a choir, the Young Choral Academy Chorus, led by chorus master Mak Chi Hoe.
The heart-warming programme features traditional Christmas carols alongside more contemporary numbers, most of which were arranged by the talented Wong Jun Xian. Sing your heart out to all-time favourites in the opening number of Leroy Anderson’s “Christmas Festival” featuring eight carols like “Joy to the World”, “Deck the Halls”, “The First Noel”, and a Christmas must-have “Jingle Bells”.
The concert then moves on to more well-loved tunes like Franz Xaver Gruber’s popular composition “Silent Night”, Katherine Kennicott Davis’ “The Little Drummer Boy”, John Henry Hopkins Jr.’s “We Three Kings”, Jester Hairston’s “Mary Boy’s Child” and Felix Bernard’s “Winter Wonderland”.
A highlight of the programme will be in the form of not one but two young sopranos aged 15 and 17, Heah Junn and Heah Ernn. The two sisters have been training under the Young Choral Academy, have sung with the KL Children’s Choir and are now with its youth choir, Gaudeamus. Heah Junn will be doing a rendition of Franz Schubert’s “Ave Maria”, which was part of Walt Disney’s Fantasia (1940), while Heah Ernn will be delivering the powerful “Amazing Grace” by John Newton.
Turning up the fun factor is the Modern Carol Medley comprising “Jingle Bell Rocks”, “Santa Claus is Coming Town”, “Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer”, and many more that
will leave you with an unforgettable night of Christmas cheer.
The concert ends on a grand scale with one of George Frideric Handel’s most
the recognisable tune, “Hallelujah Chorus”, from Messiah.
A family-friendly concert for those aged 1 to 100, Christmas Extravaganza is the perfect holiday outing to round up 2022 and usher in an even more spectacular 2023.
Tickets for Christmas Extravaganza are priced at RM50 for the 8 December 2022 preview night show. For nine until 11 December shows, tickets can be purchased at RM60, RM80 or RM100 (POTA – patrons will be acknowledged on klpac’s website).
