The multi-disciplinary art group Shaman Tearoom, led by Aiwei Foo and Kent Lee, is presenting a performance titled “Microcosm” featuring percussionist Yoong How Thong.

The performance will take place from 8 pm to 9 pm at the Ramli Studio in Bukit Tunku and will run for three consecutive days starting on February 10th, 2023.

The theme of “Microcosm” explores the parallel between the external world and the internal universe of the body. The performance aims to show that understanding the microcosm within our body can give us insight into the macrocosm of the Earth and the universe.

Lao Tzu inspires this concept through the teachings of Tao Te Ching.

Without going outside,

you are aware of the world,

Without looking out of your window,

you see the way of Tao,

The farther one goes, the less one knows.

Thus the sage knows without traveling; Sees without looking;

Achieves without doing.

Tao Te Ching, also known as Lao Tzu’s Book of the Way, is a Chinese classic text that is believed to have been written by Lao Tzu in the 6th century BCE.

The text contains 81 verses that are meant to provide guidance and philosophical insight into the way of life, often referred to as Taoism. The teachings in Tao Te Ching revolve around the concept of the Tao, which is the ultimate reality and the source of all things, and encourage individuals to live in harmony with nature and the Tao.

In Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu emphasizes the importance of simplicity, humility, and non-action (wu-wei) as the key to finding peace and happiness in life.

The text also explores the idea of the microcosmic/macrocosmic parallel, where the individual’s internal universe is believed to mirror the external natural world and the universe as a whole. This concept forms the basis of the Microcosm performance by the Shaman Tearoom.

The performance explores music composition and improvisation with DAW (digital audio workstation), acoustic music instruments, texts, vocals and tea ceremony to explore the possibility of how human experience can most harmoniously exist within oneself and evolve within the surrounding environment.

Recently Shaman Tearoon took part in a “live” art presentation organized by ITBA Festival during Singapore Art Week 2023.
