Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has established itself as a leader in cybersecurity research and development, with a focus on mitigating emerging cybersecurity threats.

UTM Vice-Chancellor Prof. Datuk Ir. Ts Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail stated that UTM’s researchers have been working tirelessly to identify and address the latest cyber threats facing individuals and organizations.

The technology-driven institution has not only prioritizes research and development in cybersecurity but also focuses on reskilling and developing talents in this area. UTM offers a Master of Cybersecurity and several professional programs, including the Razak Faculty of Technology and Informatics.

UTM also partners with agencies such as Cyber Security Malaysia and has been accorded Premier Digital Tech University status by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) since 2017.

The university has established various centres of excellence, including the Big Data Research Centre and the Information Assurance and Security Research Group (IASRG), which have been developing “eyeNoon,” a research product that acts as a 4th generation firewall and filters unproductive websites.

UTM’s Multimedia Protection (MProtec), Software for Trusted Environment (SoftTrust), and Cyber-Physical System (CPS) research groups are working on Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI), Digital and Vehicle Forensics projects using AI, data analytics, and economic security technologies.

UTM is also actively raising awareness about cybersecurity issues through its outreach programs, which educate individuals and organizations on protecting themselves from cyber threats. UTM academics, researchers, and students consistently participate in hackathons to promote awareness of cybersecurity.

To ensure sustainable cooperation between academia and industry in this area, UTM has established joint labs and innovation hubs, including UTM-CSM Cyber Threat Intelligence Lab, UTM-Ericsson 5G Innovation Centre, and the Security Operation Centre (SOC) established by UTM in collaboration with MDEC and Tecforte.

This global partnership involves joint research efforts and proof-of-concept initiatives, establishing the UTM-Mastercard Cyber Innovation Hub.

UTM’s partnership with Mastercard will foster combined R&D capabilities in select areas of cybersecurity and analytics, paving the way for more significant innovation and collaboration in the field.
