Efforts to protect the environment have resulted in the collection of 426.12 kilogrammes of unsold food to date from the Ramadan bazaar in USJ4, Subang Jaya.

This environmental initiative was initiated on March 29 in collaboration with the private company What A Waste to curb food wastage by distributing it to those in need.

Subang Jaya state representative Michelle Ng Mei Sze praised the initiative, saying that it was a good sign that food waste was declining daily. She stated that the collected food could prevent 1,065.30 kilogrammes of greenhouse gas emissions.

“It’s a good sign that food waste is declining daily. This campaign serves as a reminder for us to play a role in protecting the environment,” Ng said on Facebook.

The initiative collected 300 kilogrammes of food on its first day, which could generate 702 kilogrammes of carbon. To continue the campaign, Ng collaborated with the same company on March 17 to collect 177 kilogrammes of leftovers over the course of three days during the state legislative assembly.

Ng also shared that What A Waste had provided a collection schedule for the bazaar’s vendors, and she hoped that more vendors would participate in the environmental initiative.

With the increasing number of food bazaars and markets in Malaysia, the collection of unsold food from these events has become an important environmental issue. Initiatives like this one serve as a reminder to the community to reduce waste and contribute to a healthier environment.
