The Sarawak government, under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has unveiled its ambitious plan to establish fully sustainable public transportation options in the state by 2030.

The premier announced this goal at the Shape the World Summit 2023 gala dinner, highlighting the government’s commitment to renewable energy and the promotion of a smart city concept through the integration of digital technologies.

With a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability, Sarawak aims to create a clean and carbon-free future.

Abang Johari expressed his vision for a future where almost all public transportation in Sarawak would operate on either hydrogen or electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030. This ambitious goal aligns with the government’s commitment to renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions.

By transitioning to sustainable transportation options, such as hydrogen or EVs, the state aims to create a cleaner and greener environment, particularly in the capital city of Kuching.

In addition to hydrogen and EVs, the state government is exploring other forms of renewable energy to power public transportation. This includes harnessing solar and wind power, as well as utilizing hydroelectricity through public-private cooperation.

An example of such collaboration is the partnership between the state government and Shell, a multinational British oil and gas company, to generate power for an offshore platform in the South China Sea using solar and wind energy.

Currently, the state’s energy mix comprises 70 per cent hydroelectricity, providing a solid foundation for transitioning to greener transportation alternatives.

The premier emphasized that the state government is dedicated to ensuring a sustainable future. This commitment is reflected in the formulation of the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, which focuses on economic prosperity, social inclusivity, and environmental sustainability.

By integrating renewable energy sources and embracing innovative technologies, Sarawak aims to create a thriving smart city that prioritizes sustainability.

Abang Johari also stressed the importance of addressing climate change and finding solutions to mitigate its impact. The state government’s efforts, including the development of hydropower, solar and wind farms, and the responsible management of natural resources, serve as key solutions to combat climate change and promote a sustainable environment.
