Children’s eye health holds profound importance in shaping their overall development and well-being. The formative years of childhood mark a critical phase for eye and brain growth. This underlines the significance of parents and guardians vigilantly monitoring their children’s eye health to ensure the optimal maturation of their visual system.

While parents have been dutifully attentive to their children’s well-being, the unexpected arrival of the pandemic has disrupted routines and affected various aspects of life, including the eye health of children. Dr Chin Pik Kee, Paediatric Ophthalmologist at Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City, shared that data from other countries indicates a surge in myopia rates during lockdowns and virtual schooling.

Besides myopia, a common condition characterized by nearsightedness, other concerns linked to children’s eye health include digital eye strain due to excessive screen time, potential eye injuries from various sources, the impact of childhood obesity on eye health, and inadequate awareness about regular eye screenings.

Dr Chin suggested strategies to address these issues. While digital device use for classes and homework is inevitable, instilling good habits such as taking breaks, looking into the distance every 20 minutes, blinking regularly, maintaining proper posture, and reducing recreational screen time can mitigate digital eye strain.

Regarding screen time recommendations, Dr Chin advised against digital gadget use for children under 2 and limiting screen-based activities to a maximum of 2 hours a day for those under 10, with intervals.

Underscoring the importance of outdoor activities and creative play, Dr Chin noted that spending at least 2 hours outdoors daily can significantly lower myopia risk and delay the need for glasses.

To ensure children’s eye health, proactive steps include regular eye screenings, promoting outdoor activities, fostering a balanced diet rich in eye-supporting nutrients, and educating children about eye safety and injury prevention.

Dr Chin also cautioned against unnecessary dietary supplements, emphasizing the need for professional guidance. In this era where eyes are windows to the world, staying informed about the latest research and recommendations from eye care professionals is paramount.

Parents are advised to remain watchful for any signs of vision problems or discomfort and promptly consult an eye doctor if anything seems amiss. By prioritising children’s eye health, parents contribute to a brighter future for their young ones.
