Libaran Island is home to the progressive Walai Penyu Conservation Park, where turtle protection and community empowerment thrive hand in hand.

Sabah’s Assistant Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai recently paid a visit to witness the impactful collaboration between the conservation park and the local inhabitants.

The park’s founder, Alexander Yee, and Sabah Tourism Board representatives were also present during the visit. With a focus on safeguarding endangered turtle species and preserving delicate ecosystems, the island’s potential as a unique tourism destination is highlighted.

The Synergy of conservation and community

Joniston, also the chairman of the Sabah Tourism Board, underscored the significance of protecting Libaran’s endangered turtle species and preserving the island’s ecosystems for future generations.

He commended the island community’s craftsmanship in producing handicrafts using local materials and their commitment to boat-making. The locals, who have a profound connection with the land and sea, play a vital role as educators, imparting the importance of turtle preservation and marine conservation.

Joniston’s visit exemplifies the Sabah Tourism Board’s dedication to promoting environmentally beneficial activities and supporting local communities. He emphasized that investing in community-driven conservation efforts establishes a responsible tourism model while preserving the environment.

Visionary plans for empowerment

Founder and Managing Director of Walai Penyu Conservation Park, Alexander Yee, shared his visionary plans to integrate the local community into the conservation landscape.

Yee’s goal is to gradually empower the community to take the lead in turtle conservation initiatives, fostering their sense of ownership and sustainability. He believes in empowering the community to become stewards of their environment, ensuring the long-term success of both turtle conservation and the well-being of the islanders.

Since its establishment in 2010, Walai Penyu Conservation Park has played a pivotal role in protecting the nesting and hatching sites of endangered turtle species. The park’s efforts have also contributed to maintaining a cleaner island environment, with the community taking responsibility to keep the surroundings debris-free.

The collaborative efforts of Walai Penyu Conservation Park and the local community stand as a model of effective conservation and community engagement. Libaran Island’s unique potential as a distinctive tourism product is underscored by its dedication to turtle protection and ecological preservation.
