The residents of Kg Orang Asli Seletar Sg Temon, located in Perling, Johor Bahru, have reason to celebrate as they welcome enhanced internet connectivity, courtesy of Starlink satellite devices provided by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
This development is a vital step in MCMC’s ongoing efforts to address the issue of inadequate internet access in various regions across Malaysia.
Starlink bridging the connectivity gap
Kg Orang Asli Sg Temon had long grappled with internet connectivity issues, primarily caused by network interference from neighbouring Singapore.
This interference led to their phone lines connecting to the Singapore frequency, severely impeding their access to the internet.
In response, the installation of Starlink satellite devices has been introduced as a temporary solution while the government works towards improving Malaysia’s connection frequency.
Deputy Communications and Digital Minister Teo Nie Ching emphasised that this new facility would significantly enhance internet access for residents, with particular benefits for the education of Orang Asli children.
“The fourth device was installed here in KOA Sungai Temon last Saturday (Aug 30). The next installation programme is expected to be in Sarawak before the Hari Malaysia celebration,” she said.
Salim bin Palon, the village head of Kg Orang Asli Sg Temon, expressed his belief in the significant benefits the Starlik connection would bring to the community.
According to Salim, having a reliable internet connection would enable the villagers to reap the benefits of being online such as participating in the ecommerce.
“We are grateful that finally the villagers have access to a stable and fast internet connection,” he added.
Additionally, he noted that this development would motivate the villagers to access the internet for educational purposes, fostering a desire for knowledge and learning within the community.
A faster, more reliable connection
The Starlink device has been installed at the Multipurpose Hall in Kg Sg Temon, offering coverage within a radius of approximately 100 meters. Citizen’s Journal check revealed that residents are already reaping the benefits of this enhancement. The device is providing an impressive download speed of 31 Mbps.
Jefri Salim, a resident of Kg Orang Asli Sg Temon, expressed his satisfaction with the improved internet connection. He underscored its importance, particularly for the education of Orang Asli children.
Jefri, a parent of two school-going kids, noted that reliable internet access supports their education and nurtures their enthusiasm for learning.
Khairul Salim, another resident, welcomed the prospect of a stable internet connection, addressing the persistent instability in the village’s existing connection due to its location.
As an engine repairman for boats, Khairul found the internet to be a valuable resource for continuous learning and skill enhancement.
Furthermore, the improved connectivity is expected to reduce the costs associated with reloading internet data plans, providing financial relief to the community.
A lifeline to the virtual world
Tony, a resident of the village, shared that they had previously sought assistance from the government and NGOs to address their internet connectivity challenges, particularly regarding access to clinical records during health checkups by health authorities. Unfortunately, these requests went unanswered.
However, with the introduction of Starlink internet, Tony sees immense benefits for the community, enabling them to connect to the virtual world.
As a fisherman, Tony stressed the significance of this connectivity, allowing them to access crucial government online applications, such as logging their diesel subsidy usage. He encouraged responsible use of the fast internet connection and urged residents to avoid unnecessary social media postings.
Eddie Salim, another resident, pointed out that numerous NGOs had expressed their willingness to donate computers for the benefit of Orang Asli children in the past. However, the usage of these computers was severely restricted due to the lack of internet connectivity.
“We are optimistic that with this high-speed internet, NGOs will step forward to donate computers, enabling our children to learn more effectively,” Eddie expressed.
The installation of Starlink satellite devices in Kg Orang Asli Sg Temon is a promising step towards alleviating connectivity challenges.
As part of a broader initiative, the MCMC plans to expand the deployment of Starlink devices in areas with poor internet access throughout Malaysia, with a focus on identifying suitable locations, including those in Sabah and Sarawak.
