JB Happy and Joyous Club: 15 years on and still laughing

Johor Baru Happy and Joyous Club commemorates its 15th Anniversary with vibrant Malaysia Day celebrations, spreading unity and happiness.

The Johor Baru Happy and Joyous Club, a bastion of happiness and togetherness, rejoiced in the spirit of unity and joy as it marked its 15th Anniversary.

This jubilant event, graced by members, non-governmental organizations, and charitable souls, paid a heartfelt tribute to the essence of unity and happiness that the club has cultivated.

A celebration of Malaysia Day

In commemoration of Malaysia Day, celebrated on September 16, attendees were encouraged to embrace traditional attire, reflecting the rich cultural diversity of Malaysia.

The kaleidoscope of vibrant colours and intricate designs added an extra layer of festivity to the occasion. Participants donned traditional attire with pride, showcasing the nation’s cultural tapestry.

True to its reputation, the celebration was a testament to the club’s unwavering commitment to spreading happiness. Laughter and merriment resonated throughout the venue, with not a moment of dullness.

Participants wholeheartedly engaged in a variety of activities that brought smiles and laughter to every face. The event provided a heartwarming display of unity and joy, embodying the very spirit of Malaysia Day.

The festivities featured singing, dancing, a captivating drum circle presentation, heartfelt testimonies by long-time members, and a lively fashion show showcasing the best traditional attire. However, it was an unconventional activity that stole the show.

Participants embarked on the amusing challenge of wrapping themselves from head to toe in exquisitely embroidered sarongs. This unique endeavour resulted in hilarious scenes of participants contorting to fit into a circle inside the sarong.

Spreading happiness among friends

The Johor Baru Happy and Joyous Club was founded 15 years ago by Fung Lee Jean, a retired pharmacist with a passion for spreading happiness among friends and clients. Lee Jean’s journey led her to the transformative practice of Laughter Yoga, pioneered by Dr. Madan Kataria in 1995.

After rigorous training under Dr. Kataria, Lee Jean became a certified Laughter Yoga instructor.

Describing Laughter Yoga, Lee Jean explained, “It involves a series of movement and breathing exercises designed to promote deliberate laughter.”

Practitioners believe that intentional laughter can yield benefits similar to spontaneous laughter, providing the joy derived from a hearty joke.

Globally, approximately 5,000 individuals are dedicated Laughter Yoga practitioners, with the Johor Baru Happy and Joyous Club boasting a membership of 235. They regularly convene at public parks around Johor Baru.

In an earlier interview, Lee Jean outlined the club’s future goals: “We aim to expand our reach, encouraging more young adults and men to join us, while inspiring the establishment of Happiness and Joyous clubs nationwide.”

The Johor Baru Happy and Joyous Club’s 15th Anniversary celebration, combined with Malaysia Day festivities, stands as a shining example of the club’s enduring commitment to fostering unity and spreading happiness. With laughter as their guiding light, they continue to inspire and uplift their community.
