Sunway Medical Centre (SMC), has taken a pioneering step towards transforming the perception of healthcare with its recent SunMed Carnival.
This community health event not only brought together community members and healthcare professionals but also opened the doors of knowledge to children of all ages.
The SunMed Carnival underscored that a hospital can be more than just a place for medical treatment; it can also serve as an engaging platform for learning and sharing health-related insights.
Fostering a sense of curiosity and awareness
With over 1,900 attendees, the SunMed Carnival offered an array of family-friendly educational activities designed specifically for children. These activities introduced young minds to the world of healthcare, fostering a sense of curiosity and awareness.
One of the highlights of the event was the ambulance tour, which left children wide-eyed with wonder as they got the chance to ride in a lifesaving vehicle. This experience not only thrilled them but also imparted knowledge about the critical role ambulances and paramedics play in patient care.
Additionally, the carnival featured arts and crafts workshops, a colouring contest, and educational games such as a first aid kit quest and a body organ match. These activities equipped children with essential skills to respond to common injuries and provided insights into the intricate systems of the human body.
Moreover, attendees had access to health and eye screenings, speech and hearing tests, spine assessments, and dietary advice. This holistic approach towards healthcare education ensured that participants left the event not only entertained but also better informed about their well-being.
Comprehensive healthcare services
The SunMed Carnival also served as a platform to introduce the new Tower D at Sunway Medical Centre. This facility is a one-stop centre dedicated to meeting the healthcare needs of infants, children, and adolescents.
Notably, it houses the Children’s Emergency, which is the first emergency department in a private Malaysian hospital exclusively devoted to children under 12 years old. This development highlights the hospital’s commitment to providing comprehensive healthcare services for the entire family.
Attendees, like Wong Ley Peng and Elizabeth Jonathan, expressed their satisfaction with the event. Wong Ley Peng and his family from Subang Jaya found the health screenings and educational activities valuable. Elizabeth Jonathan and her three daughters were equally enthusiastic about the event’s offerings, with her youngest daughter being particularly proactive in participating in various activities.
Beyond the festivities, the carnival exemplified the potential of healthcare education when combined with the joy of learning and a sense of community. This event reinforces the role of hospitals as hubs for community wellness and education.
