The International Choir Competition, Forum, and Workshop for 2025 will find its home in Kuching as organised by the German cultural organisation, INTERKULTUR.
INTERKULTUR is renowned for its international choir competitions and festivals, fostering unity through music for over three decades.
Rich history of bringing together choir
INTERKULTUR has a rich history of bringing together choirs and singers from around the world, connecting over 10,000 choirs and 450,000 participants. Kuching, with its multicultural background and a track record of hosting music festivals like the Rainforest World Music Festival and the Borneo Sonic Music Festival, is a fitting choice for this event.
Datuk Snowdan Lawan, Sarawak’s Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, emphasised the integral role of music in Sarawak’s diverse culture. Traditional and ethnic music plays a crucial part in their cultural gatherings, and the event presents an opportunity for INTERKULTUR and delegates to explore and collaborate with local talents.
INTERKULTUR’s events are guided by the belief that singing has the power to unite diverse cultures and worldviews. Their motto, “Singing together brings nations together,” reflects their mission.
Celebration of music and unity
The International Choir Competition in Kuching is expected to draw approximately 1,000 participants. Of these, 200 will be from the local choral communities, while around 800 are anticipated to come from international backgrounds. INTERKULTUR places great importance on choral singing as a socially inclusive activity free from discrimination and prejudice.
Stefan Bohlander, Vice President of INTERKULTUR, highlighted Sarawak’s reputation for its peaceful and welcoming attitude, aligning with the values of their events. It is believed that the International Choir Competition will contribute to mutual respect and understanding between different cultures.
With Kuching as the host, the 2025 International Choir Competition promises to be a celebration of music and unity, as participants from around the world gather to sing and connect, transcending cultural boundaries.
