A grand celebration marked the centenary of the Penang Hill funicular railway, commemorating its inaugural journey on October 21, 1923.
This historic event opened the doors to the mesmerising natural beauty and panoramic vistas of Penang, playing a pivotal role in providing access to the lush landscapes and breathtaking views.
The gala dinner, hosted at G Hotel, was graced by Penang Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, who praised the railway’s century-long legacy. He highlighted the railway’s transformation over the years, attributing it to the collaborative efforts of the Penang state government and the Penang Hill Corporation (PHC).
Enhancing the Penang Hill experience
Over the years, the Penang government and PHC have undertaken several initiatives to enhance the hill’s infrastructure and amenities while maintaining a balance with conservation.
Their unwavering commitment to safety and reliability, including slope stabilization and maintenance works, has been integral. Additionally, they have developed the forward-thinking Penang Hill Summit Area Concept Master Plan.
Chow expressed that the celebration not only honours the past but also offers a glimpse into the future. He stated, “We are committed to enhancing the Penang Hill experience, making it more accessible, enjoyable, and sustainable for everyone.”
Chow took the opportunity to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of those who contributed to the funicular railway’s success, including the funicular design engineer, A. R. Johnson.
Enduring significance of Penang Hill Funicular Railway
Chow also unveiled several upcoming projects that aim to elevate the Penang Hill experience further. Notable among these is the ongoing Upper Station project, the redevelopment of Cliff Café (Astaka), the creation of a second gallery known as the Gallery @Gatehouse, incorporating immersive reality technology, and the redevelopment of Coolie Line (Phase 6 development).
The gala attendees were treated to captivating stage performances and a sumptuous dinner, making it a memorable evening. Notable dignitaries at the event included former chief ministers Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon and Lim Guan Eng, Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Dr Mohammad Abdul Hamid, State Secretary Datuk Rosli Isa, and Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) general manager Datuk Cheok Lay Leng.
