Ipoh–KL HSR awaiting green signal for high speed rail

The Ipoh–KL HSR proposal, promising a swift 40-minute journey could be Malaysia’s first high-speed rail project offering a rapid connection between the two cities.

The prospect of a high-speed rail (HSR) linking Ipoh to Kuala Lumpur (Ipoh–KL HSR), reducing travel time to just 40 minutes, is on the horizon pending government approval, reported Sin Chew.

This private initiative, distinct from the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore HSR proposal, has been presented by a Chinese conglomerate. If realised, it could revolutionise Malaysia’s rail infrastructure and set the stage for future HSR projects.

Private proposal and government nod

Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, the Perak infrastructure, energy, water, and public transportation committee chairman, revealed that the state government has received a proposal from a Chinese conglomerate.

The proposed HSR, with a top speed of 280 km/hour, would significantly cut travel time between Ipoh and KL. However, it hinges on approvals from the Transport Ministry and the Selangor government, as the rail would traverse through Selangor to reach KL

Although the proposal is a private financial initiative, it requires thorough scrutiny, including a feasibility study, before advancing.

Nizar expressed hope that the project could commence during the tenure of the unity government, targeting completion by 2028. This potential HSR marks a significant milestone in Malaysia’s transportation landscape.

Ipoh–KL HSR: Changing travel dynamics

The Ipoh–KL HSR, if approved, would transform travel dynamics between the two cities. Currently, the KTM electric train service takes over two hours and 38 minutes for the journey.

In contrast, the proposed HSR would revolutionise commuting, providing a swift alternative to the existing rail service and driving, which can take up to three hours.

Notably, the Ipoh train station has emerged as the second busiest in the country after KL Sentral, signalling the significance of rail travel in Perak.

With more than 910,000 passengers recorded last year, and over 2.14 million passengers travelling to Perak by rail, the demand for efficient rail services is evident. The proposed HSR aims to meet this demand, offering a faster and more convenient option for commuters.

The Ipoh–KL HSR initiative could set the precedent for high-speed rail projects in the country, offering a promising future for efficient and rapid intercity travel.
